Marat Baltibaev (b. 1961) is a freelance
photographer who developed a professional career in advertising
and journalism. Baltabaev earned
a technical degree in electro-mechanics before taking up photography in
1983.
He says his work is "photographing life." The peeling paint, dirt roads and generally disheveled air of
their pictures is at least as representative of modern Central Asian
life as the ancient monuments and government sponsored "folklore" of
the Communist period.
| This group of photographs includes an extraordinary documentation of life at a leper colony in Karakalpaktia, near the Aral Sea.
